Goyal Knitfab Pvt Ltd, a leading Indian specialty warp knit fabric manufacturer, has announced the successful development of permeate spacer for spirally wound filtration modules, specifically RO (reverse osmosis) membranes.

The spacer is a high performance material for use in spirally wound RO and UF (ultra filtration) elements and the fabric can be used as a reinforcing layer in order to increase efficiency and durability of RO and UF elements. The Goyal Knitfab permeate spacer is galled GK SpaceFIL and the company says it passes strict US FDA testing norms for use for potable water and liquids applications.

“SpaceFIL is a thermally bonded advanced material with outstanding properties and unique structure. Use of SpaceFIL will help extend the performance of filtration media and optimize flow rate,” says Goyal Knitfab’s Sales & Marketing Manager Jigar Khatri.

Reverse osmosis is most commonly known for its use in drinking water purification from seawater, removing the salt and other substances from the water molecules. It is a membrane-technology filtration method that removes many types of large molecules and ions from solutions by applying pressure to the solution when it is on one side of a selective membrane. The result is that the solute is retained on the pressurized side of the membrane and the pure solvent is allowed to pass to the other side. To be ‘selective’, the membrane should not allow large molecules or ions through the pores (holes), but should allow smaller components of the solution (such as the solvent) to pass freely.

According to Goyal Knitfab, all water purification equipment manufacturers in India are currently dependent on expensive imports for filtration membranes and the availability of its locally manufactured permeate spacer could give membrane manufacturers a local alternative supplier. This, the company says, can lead to significant savings in lead times, precious foreign exchange and lower stocks.

Goyal Knitfab is based in Surat, a synthetic textiles hub in India, and is a leading manufacturer of warp knit fabrics for various technical applications as well as fashion applications. SpaceFIL carriers are available in custom weights, widths and colours to meet specific customer needs.
