Alcantara – the microfibre-based alternative to leather – was featured in a wide range of new vehicles at the recent Auto Shanghai 2021 (April 21-28).
The material has become the preferred interior for many leading car manufacturers and their customers due to its breathability, softness and scuff resistance, as well as the flexibility it allows in seat and component assembly and its ability to take bold colours.
Alcantara –is based on Toray’s “islands in the sea” bicomponent fibres of around 60% polyester and 40% polyurethane, which are then cut into staple fibres and have the “sea” components dissolved out, before being needled and dyed.
Since 2011, its production in Italy has been carbon neutral from cradle to grave and capacity has recently been doubled to meet demand.
At the Shanghai show, new cars to feature it included those from BMW, GWM, Hongqi, Lynk, Peugeot and SAIC.
