The changing landscape for Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers - 40 company profiles (2nd edition)

'Automotive Textiles: The Changing Landscape for Tier 1 and Tier 2 Suppliers – 40 company profiles (2nd Edition)' provides the latest analysis of the fast-altering global automotive textiles industry and builds on the expertise of MobileTex, the monthly newsletter for the transport textiles sector.

Featuring an overview of the global automotive industry and the wide-ranging use of textile materials in vehicles, this new report covers the latest developments with regard to product areas and leading players, bringing together the key themes that are forecast to play a prominent role in future generations of automotive textiles.

Written by Adrian Wilson, this in-depth report, with more than 200 pages and over 100 tables:

  • examines the global automotive industry
  • defines automotive fabrics and textiles
  • identifies key areas of application
  • contains profiles of 40 key users and producers of automotive textiles

Full Product Description

The use of textiles in automotive applications includes floor coverings; upholstery; belts, tubes and tapes; tyre cord; safety belts; airbags; components; and filters.

As a result of higher demand for increased comfort and improved safety, the use of textile materials has increased from 20 kg in a mid-size car in 2000 to 26 kg today. In the drive towards lowering weight for reducing both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, many current developments are including new uses for fabrics, and by 2020, it is predicted that the same sized car will contain 35 kg of textiles. This progress, however, is being offset, in the wider scheme of things, by the related trend towards smaller vehicles.

Meanwhile, the global automotive interiors market was worth an estimated US$170bn in 2007, and until only recently appeared on course to grow to a value of US$210bn by 2017. Since then, of course, things have changed rapidly. In 2008, global vehicle production fell for the first time in more than 30 years and declined even more steeply in the first half of 2009.

The impact on suppliers to the automotive OEMs has been disastrous – and only compounded by escalating raw materials costs – resulting in many plants being closed or idled and companies pushed into bankruptcy. Even before this latest recession, however, the automotive industry supply chain had been in a process of ongoing consolidation – in 1988 there were an estimated 30,000 suppliers and by 2010 it is likely there will be less than 3,000.
