This year’s CFDA Fashion Awards red carpet has been created by a nylon yarn producer Aquafil and ege carpets, one of Europe's leading high-quality carpet producers, and made with Econyl regenerated nylon fibre. “Unlike most red carpets that have a one-way ticket to the landfill, CFDA Fashion Award red carpet is next year’s couture,” said Aquafil.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) is a not-for-profit trade association whose membership consists of more than 500 of America’s foremost womenswear, menswear, jewellery and accessory designers. Each June, the international fashion community honours the best and brightest in American design at the CFDA Fashion Awards.

The 2018 CFDA Fashion Awards ceremony, in partnership with Swarovski for the 17th year, was hosted by Issa Rae this week, at the Brooklyn Museum, NY.

Made by ege carpets with Aquafil’s Econyl regenerated nylon, the carpet can be recycled infinitely without ever losing its quality, according to the manufacturer. Now, after the ceremony is over, worn parts will be recycled at Aquafil’s carpet recycling plant in Phoenix, while areas in good condition will be reused as is.

Made from 100% upcycled nylon waste materials, Econyl is suitable for creating high-quality garments that are durable, lightweight, breathable and environmentally friendly. It is said to offer the same quality and performance as traditionally manufactured nylon and can be recycled an infinite number of times without any loss in quality, according to the manufacturer.

Once collected, the waste goes through the Econyl Regeneration System, which includes environmentally friendly methods to turn waste into high-performance yarn. Every 10,000 tonnes of Econyl produced saves 70 thousand barrels of crude oil by avoiding extraction.

“The Econyl Regeneration System relies on depolymerisation – a chemical process that “un-zips” the Nylon 6 molecules, transforming waste back into raw materials. These raw materials can then be transformed back into new Nylon 6 polymers which are identical to the ones made from fossil fuels,” explained Giulio Bonazzi, President of Aquafil.

“We think this process is one of the best examples of the circular economy in action, because it can be repeated an infinite number of times, without decreasing the quality of the materials.”

Since 1969, an Italy based company, Aquafil has been one of the leading players in the production of polyamide 6. The Aquafil Group has a presence in eight countries on three continents, employing more than 2,700 staff at 16 plants located in Italy, Germany, Scotland, Slovenia, Croatia, the USA, Thailand and China.

H&M, Stella McCartney, Levi Strauss, and Speedo are among more than 200 brands that have embraced Econyl yarn for its quality in their products so far.
