Rock Fiber Inc. (RFI), an emerging upstream company in the basalt fibre industry based in Houston, Texas, has formed a joint venture with Oslo, Norway-headquartered ReforceTech, a global leader in composite reinforcement solutions for concrete.
ReforceTech Americas intends to become a driving force in fibre-reinforced composites for construction, delivering high-performance materials to clients worldwide, including projects aimed at coastal resiliency and with several Big Tech data centre projects that are already in its pipeline
For millions of years, molten igneous rock has surfaced from deep within the Earth, eventually cooling and solidifying. In its hardened form, it carries a rich array of chemical and mineral elements, providing the perfect raw material for a high-performance fibre. However, while the promise of igneous rock based fibre has been demonstrated for decades, production at the quality and scale required for wide range use has proven difficult until now.
RFI is advancing proven technologies to melt and blend rock in new ways. Its approach harnesses the full strength and durability of igneous rocks like basalt and andesite, transforming them into a new class of high-performance, environmentally friendly fibres for advanced structural composites.
“ReforceTech Americas marks a major step forward in high-performance, cost-effective and sustainable reinforcement solutions,” says RFO chairman Gerry McDougall. “We appreciate the ReforceTech team’s efforts in creating a platform that raises industry standards. By integrating our fibre, we’ll be delivering stronger, more durable and eco-friendly reinforcement solutions that are also more economical. This venture is set to transform concrete reinforcement, offering a superior alternative to traditional materials like steel rebar, while reducing carbon emissions in construction.”
“After 20 months of discussions, we recognised that working with an upstream partner which shares our vision is the best way to drive growth and innovation,” adds ReforceTech chairman Fridtjof Falck. “As a leader in composites, ReforceTech sees this joint venture as a chance to enhance efficiency, expand market reach, and accelerate industry advancements. Together, we can provide a superior reinforcement solution that meets construction demands while reducing reliance on steel and cutting carbon emissions.”
Established in 2008 and based in Norway and Ireland, ReforceTech is a pioneer in composite reinforcement solutions, offering high-performance, non-metallic alternatives for concrete structures, with internationally certified products and a strong track record of over 200 global projects – from residential buildings to high-security data centres.
