Moon Creative Lab venture Variloom has received an ISPO 2024 Award for its Mirage3DP shorts for water sports, developed with Rip Curl and Bilio.
The shorts feature a 3D printed waistband for stability in the water and integrated panels for fit and ventilation. They are made from a recyclable blend of bio-based TPU and wool for comfort and durability.
Variloom’s patent pending 3DP filament printing system balances softness, stretch and adaptable performance by combining bio-based TPU with carefully selected natural additives and fibres.
For soft goods, it offers on-demand, on-site, print-to-shape 3D fabrication that reduces production waste, lead times, product inventory and the dependence on offshore manufacturing by bringing customisable production closer to the consumer.
“Our Variloom patents cover a number of ways to produce 3D printed textiles that are flexible, soft to the touch and wearable, with adaptable performance,” said Bethany Meuleners, venture lead for sustainable fashion at Palo Alto-headquartered Moon Creative Lab. “The ISPO Award is a tremendous recognition of the work we are doing in the area of sustainable and high-performance apparel. We will be continuing to improve our capabilities and speed in our processes through innovations in machinery to create and fully recycle fabrics.”
