3M Thinsulate Featherless Insulation has been named in the Top 10 Insulations by ISPO Textrends, the platform for innovative textiles and components for sportswear manufacturing.
The winning materials, including 3M Thinsulate, will be showcased at the upcoming ISPO Beijing that takes place from 28-31 January and ISPO Munich set to take place early next month.
This new insulation was designed to closely mimic the look and performance of natural down with two times the loft when wet and without the allergens, the company reports. It is said to be as lightweight as natural down, highly breathable and provide extreme warmth for extreme conditions.
ISPO Textrends offers designers, product managers and media representatives a selection of groundbreaking textile trends and innovations, with an additional focus on sustainability, safety, and innovation next year.
An international jury, consisting of journalists, designers and independent experts selected the TOP 10 as well as up to 50 additional exceptional materials (selection) in a total of eight categories (Base Layer, Second Layer, Outer Layer, Membranes & Coatings, Accessories, Trims, Fibres & Insulations, and Soft Equipment).
Thinsulate insulation works by trapping air molecules between the wearer and the outside. The more air a material traps in a given space, the greater its insulating value. Because the microfibres in Thinsulate insulation are far finer than other fibres, they are said to trap more air in less space, which naturally makes it a better insulator, the company reports.
The product has been designed to provide high breathability, extreme warmth for extreme and wet conditions. As lightweight as natural down, it is allergen free, and is loftier than down at the same basis weight, the company reports.
“3M Thinsulate Featherless Insulation brings real value by providing an effective and cost-effective alternative to natural down,” said Erik Iverson, 3M Thinsulate Marketing Supervisor. “This innovation is just the beginning as the 3M Thinsulate Insulation brand continues to innovate bringing newer and better products to the marketplace.”
