Having collaborated for several years in developing 100% biobased and biodegradable dry-moulded products, Swedish companies OrganoClick and PulPac have developed a biobased high-performing disposable coffee cup lid.

PulPac’s technology in combination with OrganoClick’s biobased binders set a new standard for high performing and sustainable packaging, requiring less energy and water than traditional manufacturing methods.

The new coffee lid has a reduced carbon footprint of up to 80% compared to traditional alternatives and is likely to have an immediate impact on a significant market – annual global consumption of disposable coffee cups is estimated at 100,000 million.

“The coffee lid is just one example from the range of standardised dry molded fibre applications available that align with the recent EU legislation for take away items,” said PulPac CEO Viktor Börjesson. “This easily implementable and scalable on-the-go alternative fits seamlessly into a modern lifestyle.”

PulPac is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with cellulosic fibres, with the aim of replacing single-use plastics with products made with its water-free fibre-forming technology. OrganoClick’s biobased, biodegradable and home compostable binders are in part manufactured from waste streams from the food industry and are already widely used in nonwoven-based aborbent hygiene products.
