Teijin Carbon Europe has been awarded ISCC PLUS certification for the Tenax carbon fibre produced at its Heinsberg-Oberbruch plant in Germany.

In June last  year the company announced the same accreditation for its Mishima plant in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, and the production and sale of Tenax carbon fibre made with sustainable acrylonitrile began last December.

Such production is now being extended to Europe.

The sustainable acrylonitrile is based on waste and residue from biomass-derived products or recycled raw materials and is certified using the mass balance approach.

With the ISCC method, materials are verifiably tracked through complex value chains when biomass-derived raw materials are mixed with petroleum-derived raw materials to create products.

The ISCC is an independent organisation and the leading certification system in this field. Raw materials which are made from sustainable source materials via recycling or bio-based sources are labelled with a sustainability declaration.

The production processes are identical to those used in the conventional production of carbon fibres and the mechanical and chemical properties of the fibres are identical. Based on the sustainability declaration, a clear mass balance is used to differentiate between sustainable and conventional products.
