The use of composites based on flax fibres is continuing to grow in a number of end use sectors as manufacturers profit from significant technical and processing gains, impressive mechanical properties and the environmental benefits which components made from these materials can provide.
In the marine industry, for example, flax fibres are being used in the manufacture of composite components and reinforcement fabrics for panel walls and hulls for marine vessels. Elsewhere, composites based on flax fibres are increasingly popular in the manufacture of sporting goods, such as skis, snowboards and tennis racquets.
Similarly, flax fibre based composite components are finding favour in automotive and aerospace applications. In such applications, flax fibres are helpful in reducing weight and, consequently, lowering carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
The growing adoption of flax fibres has been highlighted by the Alliance for European Flax-Linen & Hemp—ahead of the 2024 edition of JEC World, which will take place at Paris Nord Villepinte during March 5-7, 2024.
