Hexoskin Astroskin smart garments ordered for Gateway

CSA contract will further inform clinical research focused on astronaut health in microgravity.

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) has awarded Hexoskin, headquartered in Montreal, Canada, a contract to develop and adapt its Astroskin smart garments for medical research on Gateway, the upcoming space station that will orbit the Moon.

Hexcel smart garments are used in the development of digital health biomarkers, scientific studies, clinical trials and defence and aerospace projects, helping to push the boundaries of medical and health monitoring and research worldwide.

Since 2019, Astroskin bio-monitoring garments have been in use on the International Space Station (ISS) and over 20 astronauts from countries including the USA, Canada, Japan, the UAE and Italy have used Astroskin sensors in clinical research focused on astronaut health in microgravity. As a result, Hexoskin is at the forefront of understanding how the extreme conditions of space impact human physiology.

Astroskin sensors in smart garments have also been used on suborbital flights, including one with astronaut Kellie Gerardi on Virgin Galactic’s mission in November 2023.

Now they will play a crucial role in monitoring the health of astronauts aboard Gateway, which is set to be used as a hub for lunar exploration and future deep space missions. The first components of Gateway are set to launch in 2027.
