Two Milliken award-winning floor covering collections, Art Media and Moment, have received another distinction – a GOOD DESIGN Award. Organized by The Chicago Athenaeum in conjunction with The European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies, the awards program honours ‘good design’ across multiple categories, including materials, technology, branding and graphic arts, among others.

“To Milliken, the essence of good floor covering design is the ability for a product to provide an unparalleled user experience. This includes offering beautiful and unique aesthetic qualities with the ease of a functionally superior flooring solution, all delivered in a way that invites designers to think about the floor plane differently,” said Barbara Haaksma, vice president of design and marketing for Milliken’s global floor covering division. “It is an honour to receive such a distinction that groups our floor covering collections with some of the greatest names in architecture and design history.”

World-renowned architects Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. established the GOOD DESIGN Awards in 1950 to honour cutting-edge designs of the highest quality in form, function and aesthetic.

Art Media Collection

Designed by Cresta Bledsoe, Art Media is a library of patterns that reinterpret iconoclastic modern art techniques and media that include charcoal, chalk, graphite, action painting, drip painting, and the optical illusions of Op Art. By exploring the boundaries of media art, the floor plane becomes a canvas for larger-than-life installation art or fine detail that feels like an intimate secret, through the use of advanced digital technology. The Art Media collection also received a NeoCon Gold Award in June.

Moment Collection

Designed by Kristin Gruenefeld, the Moment collection was influenced by the concept of ‘art in memory.’ Photography plays a key role in the design, as the collection is a journey through place and time where life is captured forever in our memory – awaiting recall. The Moment collection was also named Best of 2013 for hospitality flooring by Interior Design magazine.

Moment and Art Media are PVC free and manufactured by Milliken, a carbon negative carpet company that meets aggressive goals, including zero waste, carbon negative and green energy initiatives. Additionally, the collections contribute to LEED and other green building certifications.

Milliken is an innovation company that has been exploring, discovering, and creating ways to enhance people’s lives since 1865. Its community of innovators has developed one of the larger collections of United States patents held by a private U.S. company. With expertise across a breadth of disciplines including specialty chemical, floor covering, and performance materials, Milliken works around the world every day aiming to add true value to people’s lives, improve health and safety, and make the world more sustainable.

In 2013 Milliken was named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute for a seventh consecutive year. The award-winning company is carbon negative, thanks to the sustainable management of more than 130,000 acres of trees in Milliken forests, the use of renewable resources and its energy management system. Additionally, the company says, all Milliken products are certified carbon neutral, from textiles to chemical products.
