Technical Fibre Products (TFP), a leading nonwoven manufacturer, will be exhibiting several new nonwoven developments, designed to increase composite functionality, at the JEC World exhibition that is scheduled to take place in Paris next month.
These new developments include a novel Tecnofire fire protection material, which can be activated on demand, without heat. The intumescent mat has been designed for use in a remotely activated fire protection system and, due to the presence of the conductive fibres, has the added benefit of acting as an EMI shield, according to the manufacturer.
High performance veils
Also on display will be TFP’s new, extended range of high performance veils made from thermoplastic fibres, including polyphenylene sulphide (PPS), polyether imide (PEI), Ppolyether ether ketone (PEEK), polyamide and polyimide.
These lightweight materials are designed for use in carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) as enhancing interleaves. It has been demonstrated that they can significantly improve mode-I and mode-II fracture toughness, by up to 160% and 430% respectively, whilst adding minimum weight to the final composite part, the company reports.
Global aerospace quality standard
A further new development for TFP is the company’s certification to the AS 9100 (BS EN 9100) global aerospace quality standard. The company has been supplying into the aerospace and defence industries for over 25 years, establishing a reputation as a specialist in developing nonwovens for these highly technical and challenging applications.
Achieving the AS9100 certification this year validates this, demonstrating that TFP has the knowledge and experience necessary to satisfy the demanding requirements, processes and regulatory controls stipulated by the aerospace industry.
Multifunctional nonwoven materials
In addition to these new developments, visitors to JEC World can find out more about TFP’s novel multifunctional nonwoven materials and how they deliver a broad range of solutions for composites.
These include delivering a high quality surface finish, imparting EMI shielding, conductivity and abrasion resistance, as well as providing an effective adhesive carrier, resin flow medium or galvanic corrosion barrier.
