Texfelt claimed the Sustainability Award for its new 8mm Eco-Step nonwoven underlay at the recent Flooring Show, held from September 15-17 in Harrogate, UK.

This latest variant in the company’s SpringBond range has been developed as the go-to underlay to meet 8mm industry specifications, meaning that housebuilders now have a sustainable alternative to standard PU foam underlay. It is said to perform better than PU underlay, is 100% chemical free and has no lumps and bumps due to its precision engineered production.

Eco-Step is already gaining traction among national retailers, including a long-standing relationship with training provider FloorSkills and a recent endorsement from Bellway Homes.

It is made from 180 recycled plastic bottles per roll of underlay and also benefits from a ‘twice recycled’ process, which uses waste from the manufacturing process of other SpringBond products.

“We have listened to what the housing market has asked for and we’re proud to have developed a sustainable underlay product that balances comfort, innovative manufacturing and affordability in response to industry needs,” said Feltex sales director Danny Shortall. “We aim to provide an accessible price point for those looking to avoid using standard PU foam underlay. Our 8mm Eco-Step is the ideal product for those needing to meet industry standards or requiring an entry-level sustainable underlay alternative. On the other hand, our 9mm and 11mm ranges continue to provide enhanced levels of comfort and performance and are ideal solutions for commercial spaces or luxury environments.”

The development follows a £10 million investment in Texfelt’s Cutler Heights manufacturing plant in Bradford which has resulted in the company making significant gains in both the commercial furniture markets in the UK and the mattress industry across Europe and the Middle East.
