Following a successful product development period, Alexium International has announced it is starting the product launch phase of its flame retardant (FR) nylon products, which it will introduce over the coming months under the Ascalon trademark.

The company says it anticipates product revenues to grow rapidly in mid 2013 from an exclusive commercial agreement with Duro Textiles, its commercial partner and exclusive licensee of Ascalon for North America, and from expansions into other global territories.

Alexium holds proprietary patent applications for a process developed initially by the US Department of Defense, which allows for the surface modification and attachment of nano-particles or multiple chemical functional groups to surfaces or substrates to provide functions such as water proofing, oil proofing, anti-microbial, non-stick and UV protection. Applications under development include but are not limited to textiles, paints, packaging, glass and building materials.

Commenting on the Ascalon announcenment Nicholas Clark, Alexium’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Adopting the Ascalon trademark for our nylon flame retardant chemistry will allow us to brand, and more effectively distinguish and market our product offerings. The Ascalon treatment will pertain to Alexium’s FR topical treatments for textiles that contain 95% or more nylon. We anticipate additional trademarks to follow for Alexium products that fall into other market categories, such as nylon blends and non-textile applications.”

“We have witnessed a strong market demand and are targeting specific applications for initial product launches. For North America, we are working very closely with Duro Textiles, our commercial partner, to identify the best opportunities for early market roll-out of the Ascalon treatment. We are rapidly ticking off an extensive list of user requirements and transitioning the product to Duro Textile’s production floor,” said Stefan Susta, Alexium’s Chief Operating Officer.

Alexium says its novel, environmentally friendly, bromine and halogen-free, flame retardant treatment is addressing the need in many different textile markets as well as traditional flame retardant applications.

Following the production transition of Ascalon to Duro Textiles, Alexium will turn attention to other geographic regions and extend the chemistry to other lucrative market segments, including nylon blends and non-textile applications.

Alexium also says it continues to make positive progressions in all areas - with all business units combined, including ongoing new product development, the company is confident of growing revenues and positive results for the future.
