The Morphemat Project has been chosen from more than 400 entries to receive Belgium’s 2022 Henri van de Velde Business Innovation Gold Award.
Morphemat is an ergonomic, inflatable mat which enables caregivers in intensive care units (ICUs) to effortlessly tilt patients weighing up to 180 kg into alternate positions. The reusable mat reduces both the time and physical strain for caregivers and has many benefits for the patient.
It has been jointly developed in the project by the Belgian companies Coatex, Ergotrics and Voxdale.
Coatex, part of the Sioen Group based in Poperinge, is a market leader in ‘keders’ – made by folding and welding fabrics around flexible cores for applications in tent constructions, awnings, sails, hight speed rolling doors, publicity panels etc. It is also an expert in the laser cutting, welding and complexing of technical textiles, films and foils.
Ergotrics, of Turnout, designs and manufactures the inflatable medical positioning cushions, and Voxdale, headquartered in Wijnegem, works with start-ups, scale-ups and multinationals to accelerate the development of functional products in the medical, renewable energy, mobility and consumer product sectors.
The Henry van de Velde Awards honour Flemish designers, companies, products and projects that have a positive impact on the economy and society.
“This Henry van de Velde Award for Morphemat is a recognition for the entire team,” said Tim Dieryckx, CEO of Voxdale. “Together, we are improving working conditions in the ICU and at the same time the health of patients in critical conditions. Everything revolves around the well-being of both the patient and the caregiver.”
