The East Midlands' materials hub project (MATHUB) is running a seminar aimed at all companies and individuals who have an interest in Smart and Sensory Materials with built in technology. Key speakers are leading textile academics Professor Tilak Dias of Nottingham Trent University and Dr John Williams of Leicester's De Montfort University.
"This exciting field of development has brought the traditional knitted structure a new lease of life. An interdisciplinary approach into textile material properties, performance and design has ensured that the knitting industry has a place in a world dominated by technology," organisers said in a press statement today, adding:
"Our speakers demonstrate advances that have been developed in our region and local universities. This is a ‘must attend event' for designers and development managers who need to be aware of cutting edge materials if they want to capitalise on the technology of tomorrow."

Professor Tilak Dias
Professor of Knitting, at Nottingham Trent University, Tilak Dias, is leading the development of research in the field of electronic textiles, medical textiles and 3D knitting and knitwear design, enhancing the school's capacity to undertake internationally excellent research
Professor Dias will give an overview of his current projects demonstrating the exciting scope of smart and sensory materials, including:
Smart heating textiles (heated gloves, heating back supports and garments)
Knitted transducers, sensory and health monitoring garments
Knitted garments for motion detection and controlling electronic devices
Light emitting textiles (LET)
Textile antenna systems
3D seamless customized compression garments
Dr John Williams
Dr John Williams, Principal Lecturer - Textile Engineering & Materials Research Group (TEAM), De Montfort University
His main research focus is on support and intervention for companies either in, or seeking to enter, the technical textiles / advanced fibrous materials markets.
Dr Williams will give an overview of projects that TEAM have worked on ranging from medical applications, defence materials to sustainable fibres and new reinforcements for composites including end of life considerations.
