Italian knitted fabrics producer Eurojersey continues to support the Polytechnic University of Milan this year with the assignment of a workshop focused on the concept of The Uniformals, a new vision of the urban uniform based on the transformability of garments and their reutilisation in another form.

“Involving 56 students of Milan Polytechnic’s Department of Fashion Design, the project has dealt with the topic of The Uniformals, in which stylistic research has enabled attention to be focused on technical outerwear garments, while highlighting the performance characteristics of Sensitive Fabrics and the added value of sustainability,” the company reports.

The students have drawn inspiration from the frenetic city lifestyle, showing a preference for practical garments that are machine washable without an excessive waste of water, wrinkle-free with no need for ironing, designed with few seams or external trims and transformable to perform new functions, also thanks to the graphic labels indicating the garment sustainability.

Of the students who have designed The Uniformals, using Sensitive Fabrics as the only component for constructing the entire garment, ten finalists have been selected. The final selection process determined the three best projects: Bellum Miles by Elena Balbarau, La Forma – Wearable Words by Isabella Giambitto and Urban Commuter by Michele Misani.

Bellum Miles

Camouflage and the reinterpretation of the army uniform provides inspiration for the project by Elena Balbarau, who has created a multifunctional jacket in Sensitive Fabrics.

Conceived with a sustainable approach, the jacket transforms by folding up into a comfortable travel pillow. When interviewed regarding her choice of Sensitive Fabrics, Elena explained: “They are perfect fabrics thanks to their 3D elasticity, which has enabled me to transform and adapt the jacket into a different form as a travel pillow, in which the garment has a parallel life and a twofold function to be with us at all times.”

La Forma – Wearable Words

Letters, symbols and recollections of a love story in wartime. Innermost feelings and appearance with the roles and codes of a uniform, which does not always express the wearer. From this dichotomy, between “how I dress” and “what I am”, springs the jacket designed by Isabella Giambitto, internally embellished by fragments of letters from the front. Made from Sensitive Fabrics with heat welded seams, the jacket transforms into a lampshade for an internal lighting fixture.

Isabella put the accent on her choice of Sensitive Fabrics by stating that “fabrics resemble a white canvas for writing on and leaving an indelible mark, thanks to the excellent quality of the print. I see sustainability as a cyclical process in which I have been able to exploit the fabrics to their full potential, while also changing their function”.

Urban Commuter

Michele was inspired by the agility, safety, comfort and protection of people constantly on the move in an urban context, who also care about elegance and functionality.

His creation is an essentially styled jacket with heat welded pockets, coated zip fastenings and check printed on the inside. The buttons on the back of the jacket enable it to be folded and transformed into a backpack. “I was impressed by the versatility of the fabrics which enable construction techniques such as raw edges and heat welded details. To me, the term sustainability means pure recycling, that is to say, giving a second chance to the product, which in this case is transformed into a backpack,” he said.
