United By Blue (UBB) has announced its latest development in bison insulated outerwear – The Bison Ultralight jacket that utilises UBB’s proprietary BisonShield insulation, made of 50% salvaged bison fibre and 50% wool. Weighing in at just under one pound, this jacket is designed to provide serious warmth at an accessible price point and can be packed down to store away in an overnight bag or backpack.
“After six years of building a bison fibre supply chain, it’s safe to say we’ve come a long way in the development of our BisonShield insulation,” said Brian Linton, UBB’s founder and CEO. “The future of lightweight outerwear is progressing right before our eyes and we wanted to make sure that if we jumped in, we did so with the highest environmental standards. Our team spent years refining our BisonShield to find a blend that could be packed down while still providing serious warmth. The result is our Bison Ultralight – a lightweight, packable jacket, that we believe is the most sustainable on the market.”

The Bison Ultralight Jacket is insulated with BisonShield Technology, United By Blue’s sustainable alternative to down or synthetic insulation made with 50% salvaged bison fibre and 50% wool. The bison’s shaggy coat consists of a layer of hollow, compactable, yet resilient hairs that allows them to keep warm and dry in the harshest winter climates.
Bison fibre is an often discarded by-product of the ranching industry, but United By Blue has spent years building a supply chain to intercept these natural fibres and diverting it from a landfill. Bison fibre is naturally temperature regulating, hypoallergenic, and lightweight which makes for a natural, salvaged insulation that rivals any down or synthetic on the market.

“Our patent-pending BisonShield insulation really stands apart as a clearly differentiated choice for consumers, providing a sustainable, natural fibre alternative to down, ” commented Brendan Rauth, Senior Product Designer for United By Blue. “ A jacket insulation is only as good as it’s shell fabric, so we’ve chosen a 100% recycled ripstop with a PFC-free water resistant coating. Designed intentionally with an internal storm flap, full-coverage hood, elastic sleeve cuffs, and drawcords at the hem, the Bison Ultralight welds sustainability, function, and timeless style.”
