European production of glass fibre reinforced plastics rose for the fifth year in succession in 2017 and production was at its third highest level on record. Geographically, Germany was the largest producer, followed by Eastern Europe.

However, substantial production also took place in France, Ireland and the UK, Italy, and Portugal and Spain. The largest segment of the European glass fibre reinforced plastics industry in 2017 was that of sheet moulding compound (SMC) components and bulk moulding compound (BMC) components.

Looking to the future, the glass fibre reinforced plastics industry in Europe is expected to continue to grow as new opportunities arise in existing markets and in new markets.
