Report summary

The latest update in this series of reports summarises the trends which were on show at the European fabric fairs for the autumn/winter 2020/21 season. The author of the report visited Milano Unica, Munich Fabric Start and Première Vision Fabrics, where she interviewed exhibitors and found out first-hand which trends were proving to be the most popular.

Overall, environmental sustainability proved to be a key topic and many of the fairs hosted specialist areas dedicated to the topic. Also, there was a diverse range of environmentally sustainable products on display. Several companies were keen to promote their use of environmentally sustainable and socially responsible production processes and materials in the manufacture of their fabrics.

Such materials included traceable fibres, organic fibres and fibres derived from recycled waste materials. Other key trends on show at the fairs included nature, and this was evidenced in the widespread use of natural fibres--notably wool. The natural theme was also evident in colours, and many fabrics incorporated undyed natural fibres in various shades of browns, fawns and greys. Also evident were tones reminiscent of earth, lichen, moss, ochre and terracotta.

There was also much focus on fabrics with metallic aspects, and prints in tonal details and muted tones. In terms of pattern, woven checks and stripes were evident, as were prints in paisleys, exotic florals, abstract designs and geometric designs.
