Report summary

The latest update in this series of reports summarises the trends, which were on show at the European yarn fairs for the Autumn/Winter 2020/21 season. The author of the report visited Filo, Pitti Immagine Filati and Première Vision Yarns, where she interviewed exhibitors and found out first-hand which trends were proving to be the most popular.

The atmosphere at the fairs was upbeat, despite economic uncertainties affecting the whole of the textile and fashion industry. There was a strong focus on nature at the fairs, and this was reflected in the materials used by spinners and in many of the colours on show. Undyed yarns were important, and wool was a particularly prominent fibre. Another key trend at the fairs was that of fancy yarns--particularly those with opalescent and metallic details.

There was a strong emphasis on traceability and environmental sustainability, and spinners were keen to promote yarns incorporating environmentally sustainable materials or yarns which had been produced using environmentally sustainable processes. Yarns made from man-made cellulosic fibres were prominent, as were yarns incorporating fibres derived from pre-consumer or post-consumer waste materials.
