Cone Denim is expanding its partnership with hemp processing innovator BastCore, following the recently launched US Hemp Collection.
Cone launched the US Hemp Collection at the 2022 KingPins show in Amsterdam, with a range of fabrics including classic 3×1 and comfort stretch denims, as well as modern workwear constructions. Using BastCore US grown hemp, along with other locally sourced materials including natural indigo and US cotton, the proximity of the crops to the company’s mills in Mexico is significant in creating the smallest environmental impact and footprint possible.
BastCore has created patent-pending technology and a proprietary process that produces clean, mechanically processed, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified and USDA bio-preferred hemp fibre in Montgomery, Alabama and was recently selected as a Top 50 Startup Finalist at the WorldFestival 2022 Startup Awards.
“With a shared goal of pushing new sustainability levels, our partnership with BastCore is creating exciting opportunities that support US agriculture and its use of world-class practices and responsibly sourced products,” said Cone Denim president Steve Maggard. “Cone is always searching for new ways to collaborate across the industry to drive innovation, increase traceability and reduce environmental impact.”
US grown hemp’s many advantages in cultivation include water savings of over 50% compared to cotton, the elimination of chemicals, wet processing, pesticides and herbicides as well as high rates of carbon sequestration which benefits soil health.
