Carbios and Novozymes have announced an exclusive global strategic partnership ensuring the long-term production and supply of PET-degrading enzymes at an industrial scale.

The proprietary PET-degrading enzymes of Carbios will be supplied to the world’s first biological PET recycling plant scheduled to commence operation in 2025 in Longlaville, France, as well as to future licensees.

Carbios and Novozymes have had a partnership since 2019 to develop enzyme-based solutions and address the sustainability challenge of plastic pollution, both within PET-recycling and PLA-biodegradation. Under the new agreement, they will extend their collaboration to develop, optimise and produce enzymes that will subsequently be supplied by Novozymes to all licensees of the Carbios technology. The new agreement grants both parties exclusivity in the field of the partnership.

The new plant in Longlaville is being buily in partnership with Indorama Ventures and will have an annual capacity of 50,000 tons of enzymatically recycled PET.

In 2022, Carbios signed an agreement with the brands On, Patagonia, Puma and Salomon, to develop solutions promoting the recyclability and circularity of their products.

“We are delighted to expand our partnership with Novozymes, the world leader in biological solutions, and to build on our strong existing relationship to provide a sustainable supply solution for our future customers,” said Emmanuel  Ladent, Carbios CEO.

“By  providing  biological solutions at a large scale, Novozymes is pleased to be contributing to bringing the Carbios biorecycling of PET plastics and fibres to market,” added  Hans Ole Klingenberg, vice president of marketing  agricultural  and  industrial  biosolutions at Novozymes.
