Report summary
Many of the awards were given to companies which had undertaken ambitious projects involving products made from carbon fibres or technical fabrics. Such products included a combined solar and electric powered aircraft, an electric city bus, components for a BMW Mini, a mobile phone case, a railway bridge, a robotised injection moulding machine, and a wind turbine blade made from environmentally sustainable materials.
In this report, Robin Anson examines the recipients of awards in seven categories, namely: Aerospace; Automotive and Road Transportation - Structural; Automotive and Road Transportation - Exterior; Building, Construction and Infrastructure; Design; Equipment and Machinery; and Sustainability. Within the Design category, he describes a development by Carbon Mobile which had previously been thought impossible, namely a carbon fibre composite mobile phone case.
Also in the report, he highlights the growth in the electro mobility market, which drew much attention during the online event, and assesses the opportunities for using glass fibre composites in the manufacture of lightweight vehicles--including electric delivery vans and trucks which are needed because of the growth in online retailing.
