This follows a memorandum of understanding signed earlier this year between the company, which is headquartered in Papendrecht in the Netherlands, with Airbus.
Speaking at the 2nd International Composites Conference in Dusseldorf on November 29th, Leo Muijs of Fokker explained that FMLs consist of several layers of aluminium, glass prepreg and adhesive tape cured in an autoclave, as a cost-effective alternative to carbon fibre composites and a lighter product than pure aluminium panels, and with the additional benefits of lightning strike protection and flame retardancy. For the Airbus A380 fueslage, a total of 485 square metres of FMLs, consisting of 22 12 metre by 3 metre panels, have been supplied for more than 200 of the planes...
