The certification initiative has been strongly driven by increased customer demand for nonwovens manufactured from renewable and sustainable resources, the company reports.

International standards

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) are international standards for companies involved in the manufacture of products derived from forest raw materials.

Certification is granted for companies with the processes in place to ensure that any product carrying the FSC and PEFC marks contain wood-derived products from recognised, sustainably managed forests.

Suominen plants in Cressa and Mozzate, Italy, and in Nakkila, Finland, met all the independent audit steps required to prove Chain-of-Custody capabilities in the management of complete supply chain conformance with the requirements of the two certifications at each stage of the final products’ manufacture. In addition to these three plants, the Green Bay, USA, plant is also already certified.

Positive approach to sustainability

“Suominen is responding to customers’ and consumers’ worldwide demand for products reflecting a positive approach to sustainability,” commented Mimoun Saim, SVP, Operations EMEA.

“Achieving FSC and PEFC status at these plants means we may offer a wide range of certified products for hygiene, medical and wiping end-uses, including flushable wipes, for our global customers seeking sustainable solutions.”

Suominen

Suominen manufactures nonwovens as roll goods for wipes as well as for medical and hygiene products. The end products made of Suominen’s nonwovens – wet wipes, feminine care products and swabs, for instance - bring added value to the daily life of consumers.

Suominen is the market leader in nonwovens for wipes and employs approximately 600 people in Europe and in the Americas.
