Market leading nonwoven manufacturer Texfelt has announced that its newly launched SpringBond underlay, made from 85% recycled PET plastic bottles and other single-use plastics, has been awarded a BRE verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).

By achieving a BRE verified EPD, architects or fit out contractors can use SpringBond, understand its life cycle and environmental impact, and gain credits for their building or project score. SpringBond products will shortly be available through RIBA Product Selector and NBS Plus, and Texfelt will also be providing CPD materials through the RIBA platform.

“We’re immensely proud of what we’ve achieved with SpringBond in a relatively short space of time. The BRE EPD is the icing on the cake and proves the sustainability performance of the underlay. For this to be recognised by independent third-party assessors is a huge achievement for us as a family-run business,” commented James Taylor, Managing Director of Texfelt.

“We’re giving anyone working on a LEED or BREEAM assessed green building project more options and an opportunity to gain credits for their work towards the environment, and we hope the industry’s as excited about this as we are.”

SpringBond comes in three different varieties – 7mm double stick (SpringBond FR) and 9mm stretch fit for heavy contract use, and 11mm for luxury domestic use, offering superb under-foot comfort. The thickness of the underlay means it’s not just comfortable but insulating both in terms of heat and noise acoustics.  It also has industry-leading sound-proofing properties, minimising the transfer of noise between floors.

Unlike most carpet underlays SpringBond is fully recyclable at the end of its useable life and, because it contains no PU foam, there are no harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) meaning better air quality throughout the home or commercial buildings.

Up to 180 plastic bottles are used per roll of SpringBond. Assuming five rolls are used by the average household, that’s 900 bottles per house.

SpringBond FR has recently received approval from four leading adhesives companies after being exhaustively tested and approved by FBall, Uzin, Ardex and Xchem.
