Electromobility, the race to find the optimal car battery, the future of the market for electric vehicles and promising future-oriented developments were among themes discussed at one of the world’s most important battery trade fairs, The Battery Show, which took place in Detroit, last week. Last year, 1.3 million electric vehicles were registered worldwide – 324,553 of them in China and 158,977 in the USA.

Freudenberg Performance Materials recognised the future importance of electro-mobility early on and has been working on the improvement of separators for lithium-ion batteries for several years.

“We want to improve the temperature stability and thus the safety of batteries. That is why we have developed a thin-film separator made from nonwoven material with a unique ceramic impregnation,” explained Margarita Messerle, Sales & Marketing Lithium-Ion Batteries, Freudenberg Performance Materials, Weinheim, Germany.

Lithium-ion batteries

The market for electric vehicles is just beginning to develop. The race to find the optimal car battery is running flat out. These themes were demonstrated at the Battery Show in Detroit, one of the industry’s most important trade fairs. In focus was the lithium-ion battery.

Many hopes rest on it, because it promises the greatest range with the lowest possible weight. In addition, operating lifetime, safety and charging speed are of great importance. This is why the automotive industry is energetically pushing ahead with the development of rechargeable batteries worldwide. Asia and North America are leading the way, supported by specialised suppliers such as Freudenberg Performance Materials.

Next battery generation

“Many customers are already working on the next battery generation to make them more efficient, more powerful and more sustainable,” said Bill Mordecai, Sales & Marketing, Freudenberg Performance Materials, Durham, USA.

Overall, the Battery Show in Detroit demonstrated that the race for the battery of the future is far from over. Researchers worldwide are working intensively on a wide range of technologies. However, lithium-ion batteries will remain an important focal point in the future.

“The market for lithium-ion batteries continues to develop rapidly. With our many years of know-how, we are an excellent partner for our customers to successfully advance future developments,” commented Margarita Messerle.
