The textile machinery association of Germany’s VDMA has published a position paper on the raft of upcoming EU regulations relating to the sustainable and circular transformation of the textile and clothing industries.

It emphasises the importance of efficient processes and binding rules for all market participants, in addition to summarising the current status of textile-to-textile recycling processes.

The paper also stresses that the national implementation of the new EU regulations must be designed with realistic targets, measurable effects and as little bureaucracy as possible.

At the same time, market surveillance is needed to ensure a level playing field for all market participants.

To significantly advance the sustainability of the textile industry in Germany and the EU, there is also a need for a range of low-cost green energy options to be made available, in addition to positive measures such as the training of skilled labour, a reduction in bureaucracy, shorter approval periods, investment security and predictability, as well as a reduction in the tax burden.

All of these will be decisive factors in supporting sustainable business in the highly competitive textile and clothing industry, the association believes.
