Report summary

This report looks at general trends in the international yarn machinery and fabric machinery market and provides detailed analyses of various yarn machinery and fabric machinery sub-sectors.

There was a sharp rebound in shipments of textile machinery in 2021 following a poor year in 2020 resulting from the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the world economy and on textile and clothing supply chains in particular. There were increases in shipments of spinning machinery, draw texturing machinery, shuttleless weaving machinery and knitting machinery in 2021.

Shipments of short staple spindles and long staple spindles increased, although shipments of both types of machinery remained historically low. Shipments of open-end rotors, meanwhile, rose to their third highest level on record.

In draw texturing, shipments of double heather false-twist spindles and single heater false-twist spindles surged to record highs. In the weaving sector, shipments of shuttleless looms rose to their highest level since 2011 and their second highest level on record.

In the circular knitting sector, shipments of single jersey machinery shot up to their fifth highest level on record and shipments of double jersey machinery rose to a record high.

In the flat knitting sector, shipments of electronic flatbed knitting machinery shot up to their fifth highest level on record although they remained below the levels seen during 2016-19.

Trends in shipments of yarn machinery and fabric machinery to mills in China were largely in line with trends in world shipments, reflecting the fact that a large share of global shipments goes to the Chinese textile industry. Outside China, there were increases in shipments of all nine major types of machinery to the textile industries in India, and there were increases in shipments of eight of the nine major types of machinery to the textile industries in Argentina and Italy.

Also, there were increases in shipments of seven of the nine major types of machinery to the textile industries in Bangladesh and Turkey. By contrast, there were declines in shipments of six of the nine major types of machinery to the textile industries in Egypt, Iran and Myanmar, and there were declines in shipments of five of the nine major types of machinery to the textile industries in Cambodia, Indonesia and the USA. Looking ahead, shipments are unlikely to grow significantly in 2022 and 2023, reflecting a number of factors which have contributed towards economic uncertainty.
