OnceMore pulp, which is currently composed of 20% recycled textile waste and 80% renewable wood in a process developed by Södra of Sweden, is now being converted into Modal fibre by  China’s Tangshan Sanyou.

Modal fibers are produced in a modified viscose process yielding stronger and more durable fibres. They exhibit similar qualities to traditional viscose, enabling the production of breathable and soft fabrics, but are str0nger and more durable. They also exhibit rapid drying properties.

Södra is also partnering with Finnish municipal waste management company LSJH which is pioneering a solution for turning post-consumer textile waste collected from households into new feedstock.

Bestseller brand Object is the latest company to introduce a collection based on 52% OnceMore fibres, and another Bestseller brand, Selected, plans to also introduce a collection shortly.

Another Swedish fashion brand, Lindex, has meanwhile produced over one million garments based on OnceMore since starting a collaboration with Södra in 2022.

The longer-term goal of Södra is to offer a pulp based on 50% wood and 50% recycled textile waste.
