Officina39, based in Biella, Italy, introduced its expanded range of Recycrom dyestuffs at the Kingpins denim show in Amsterdam from April 11-12.
These dyes are unique in being obtained by extracting pigment powders from recycled used clothing, fibrous materials and textile scraps via a proprietary mechanical upcycling process.
New to the range are Eco Marble for obtaining frosted coloured effects, a Recycrom variant for printing applications and Recycrom Gel, for waterless processing.
The range now extends to 15 standard ready-in-stock colours, obtained from a minimum of 65% recycled textile pre and post-consumer materials, as dyes for use on cotton, wool, nylon or any other cellulosic and natural fibre or blend.
Officina39 is enabling brands to to make custom dyes from their own scraps and textile waste with Recycrom Ready to Dye which enables them to choose and create their own colours from a standard colour card, a palette of darker and brighter shades assuring a true upcycling of textile waste without any chemical synthesis. From 100kg of textile waste the process can create enough dye for 20,000 t-shirts.
“We wanted to broaden our services to meet the demands of all of our customers and started with 100% recycled content, which remains the top priority for some of our partners,” explains Officina39 managing director Andrea Venier. “We have now developed a simpler, faster and more scalable solution based on a range of ready-made in-house dyes that allow for cost and time optimisation, which we are sure will be greatly appreciated by those who choose this new sustainable option.”
The company also showed denims created with Smart Black, a bleaching process which allows light colours to be obtained from black textiles without the use of caustic soda. This process has an operating temperature of 50°C compared to the 70-80°C that standard processing requires and can be applied on elastomer-featuring stretch garments. It also prevents zip, press stud and button stains and because its application involves only one 30-minute process compared to the traditional three-step process, reduces water by 60%.
