Milan’s La Scala Theatre has seen many things over its centuries-long history, but it’s safe to say that Sunday 22nd September was the first time its spotlights ever shone on a dyestuff made from textile waste scraps.
At the Sustainable Fashion Awards 2024 organised by the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana and held on that date, Biella-based Officina39 was one of three finalists recognised for its development of patented Recycrom.
Officina39 researches and develops sustainable chemicals for the textile, apparel and denim industries, creating technologies with low environmental impact. Six years ago, it commenced the development of Recycrom and a range of pigment powders derived 100% from used clothing, fibrous material and textile scraps, through a patented mechanical upcycling process. These fibres produce exceptionally even dyes that can be used on both natural and synthetic fabrics, applied by dyeing, printing, coating or spraying.
The company has been subsequently developing and improving the technology working closely with brands, who have provided garments to be recycled for unique, custom-made dyes. Blue of a Kind, Calvin Klein, Flavia La Rocca, G-Star, H&M Group, OVS, Pangaia, Stella McCartney and Tommy Hilfiger are just some of the partners who have been involved.
To make the range even more accessible and impactful to the market, Officina39 has now launched Recycrom Ready to Dye, a range of 15 in-stock colours made from a minimum of 65% recycled pre and post-consumer textile materials, offering brands the ability to choose and create their own dyes from a standard colour chart.
