Outlast Technologies, a leader in proactive heat management, has partnered with lifestyle brand New Era Cap to develop temperature regulating hats for players during the 2014 PGA Ryder Cup.

New Era has secured exclusive rights to headwear during the biennial competition through 2016. USA players and team captains will wear these New Era caps at the 2014 Ryder Cup that will take place from 26-28 September at Gleneagles in Perthshire, Scotland.

Proactive technology

Outlast heat management technology, located in the interior panel against the forehead, is designed to enable the hat to absorb, store and release excess heat to help reduce overheating and perspiration.

Known as a proactive technology, Outlast technology is said to continuously react to the user’s skin temperature to help mitigate the onset of sweating. This differs from reactive solutions, such as wicking, that require the user to sweat and become uncomfortable before providing any benefit, the company reports.

“We are proud to partner with a company like New Era, which is always at the forefront of innovation and quality. Our technology will help keep our Ryder Cup team more comfortable so they can focus on their game,” said CEO Michael Coors.

New Era headwear

New Era will offer six silhouettes to give players options depending on personal preference and weather conditions. Outlast technology is available in four styles including the brand’s iconic 59FIFTY, a lowcrown 59FIFTY, a 39THIRTY stretch fit, and a 9FORTY adjustable.

Currently Outlast technology is only available in the headwear provided to players and not sold in stores. The two brands have plans to bring headwear infused with Outlast technology to the marketplace in the future.

“New Era has been revolutionising headwear for more than 90 years. Partnering with Outlast brings our performance products to a whole new level,” commented Christopher H. Koch, CEO of New Era. “We’re excited to bring this level of technology to athletes and we know this is just the beginning with Outlast Technologies.”

Outlast technology

Outlast technology was originally developed for NASA to protect astronauts from temperature fluctuations in space. Outlast technology utilises phase change materials (PCM) that absorb, store and release heat for optimal thermal comfort.

The PCMs have the capacity to absorb, store and release excess heat. This gives any product containing Outlast technology the ability to continually regulate skin’s microclimate. As the skin gets hot, the heat is absorbed, and as it cools, that heat is released.
