Oerlikon Barmag has completed the commissioning of a polyester filament yarn production plant expansion at Garden Silk Mills in Surat, India, which is part of the Chatterjee Group (TCG).

The conversion and new construction at the mill, which now has a total of 216 WINGS FDY spinning units, was accompanied by extensive engineering work in close cooperation between experts from Germany and India.

CTG has made investements totalling US$8 million recently, and has a second plant in Jolwa, producing polyester chips, POY, FDY and other specialty  yarns, while owning the Garden Vareli brand specialising in sarees and dress materials.

Oerlikon Barmag designs and builds systems for almost all processes for the production of textile and technical yarns based on the common polymers of polyester, polyamide 6 and 6.6 or polypropylene.

Garden Silk Mills on focuses fully drawn yarns (FDY) which are processed into textile surfaces without further finishing and are notably suitable for materials with advanced drape.

Oerlikon Barmag is the technology leader in this field and its WINGS spinning systems enable optimised production processes, low waste rates and energy savings of around 30%. The technology can be used in the FDY process for both polyester and polyamide.

The Garden Silk Mills installation includes high-performance spinning pumps, beams and spin packs with crossflow quenching and the 216 WINGS winders were installed in the direct spinning process downstream of an existing polycondensation system.

“We are particularly pleased to have equipped Garden Silk Mills with our WINGS FDY technology,” said Oerlikon Polymer Processing Solutions CEO Georg Stausberg. “We are confident that the new, state-of-the-art spinning mill will be able to produce polyester yarns for the highest demands in an economically attractive way for both the Indian market and exports.”
